Off Season Stout

The summer windsurfing season is over, so now it's time to just sit back on a cold winter's day and enjoy an awesome Stout on the nitrogen tap. Special thanks to Tim for helping me with the recipe.

Brewer: West Wind Email: dteach2584@yahoo.com
Beer: Off Season Stout Style: Foreign-Style Stout
Type: All grain Size: 5 gallons
Color:

OG: 1.069 FG: 1.018
Alcohol: 6.5% v/v (5.1% w/w)
Water: Crystal clear Tacoma water, nothing added / nothing needed.

14 oz. American crystal 60L
12 oz. American chocolate
10 oz. American black patent

Infusion mash with 3.3 gallons of water at 155 degrees for 60 minutes. Mash out at 165, then sparge with 3 gallons.

.5 oz. Mt. Hood (4.5% AA, 15 min.)

Log: Brew Date: December 9, 2007
Moved to secondary 19, 2007 (stored in cold outdoor garage)
Kegged December 22, 2007
First served Christmas Eve

note: I should have used additional sparge water (.5 gallons more)
Batch size yielded 4.25 Gallons
Actual numbers: SG=1.070, OG=1.080, TG=1.021
Carbonation: Forced Nitrogen / Stout Tap handle and faucet (first time with this set up)
Tasting: This is an awesome stout recipe. It is smooth an chocolaty instead of having a heavily roasted (coffee) taste. Add the nitro tap to it and all of our guests for our Christmas Eve party could not say enough good things about it. This will be a recipe that I come back to again and again.
