Outback Power Amber

A nice hoppy Amber with a good alcohol content. Mighty tasty!

Brewer: Buzzerj Email: buzzerj@yahoo.com
Beer: Outback Power Amber Style: American Amber Ale
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5 gallons
Color:
35 HCU (~17 SRM)
Bitterness: 45 IBU
OG: 1.067 FG: 1.020
Alcohol: 6.1% v/v (4.8% w/w)
Water: Used store bought drinking water.
Grain: 1 lb. American Crystal 40L
4 oz. American Crystal 120L
Steep: Steeped grains in 2.5 gallons water at 150°F for 30 minutes. Sparged with 3 gallons water at 170°F.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.052 6.5 gallons
3 lb. 3 oz. Light malt extract
1 lb. 8 oz. Light dry malt extract
3 lb. Amber dry malt extract
1 tsp. Irish Moss added with 45 minutes left in the boil.
Hops: 0.5 oz. Chinook (12.7% AA, 60 min.)
2 oz. Willamette (4.5% AA, 30 min.)
0.5 oz. Yakima Goldings (aroma)
Yeast: Wyeast 1332 Northwest Ale Yeast. Would recommend a pint starter minimum for this high O.G. wort.
Log: Brewed on May 31, 2008. Fermented at about 70°F for two weeks. Racked to a secondary on June 14. Bottled on June 21 with a yield of 50 bottles. Saved the remaining yeast for another beer brewed the next week. Primary fermentation started slowly (48 hours) due to the yeast being pitched without a starter being made. Once it got going the yeast was impressive.
Carbonation: Used 3/4 cup corn sugar at bottling to carbonate the beer.
Tasting: July 4 tasting - Yep it hit the zone. Nice strong hoppiness. Very good caramel flavor. Nice clarity, a great Amber treat!
