MonsterBolt

My first partial mash! I was originally going to make a 3 gallon batch with just grains, but I changed my mind and decided to make a full batch with some extract.

Brewer: Clamstalk Brewery (S.K. Murphy) Email: error23@gmail.com
Beer: MonsterBolt Style: India Pale Ale
Type: Partial mash Size: 5.5 gallons
Color:
23 HCU (~13 SRM)
Bitterness: 72 IBU
OG: 1.072 FG: 1.020
Alcohol: 6.8% v/v (5.3% w/w)
Water: Burton Salts added towards the end of the mash; otherwise, ordinary Atlanta city water.
Grain: 4 lb. 8 oz. American 2-row
1 lb. 8 oz. American Munich
12 oz. American crystal 40L
2 oz. American chocolate
Mash: 70% efficiency
I didn't have a true lauter tun, so I used a setup similar to the one described here for the minimash: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/easy-partial-mash-brewing-pics-75231/
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.066 6 gallons
3 lb. Light dry malt extract
1 lb. 8 oz. Cane sugar
8 oz. Brown sugar
It took a very long time (about an hour and a half) to get the water from 120F all the way up to boiling; I usually do a partial boil of 3 gallons rather than a full boil of 6.
Hops: 1 oz. Chinook (11.1% AA, 60 min.)
1 oz. Simcoe (11.9% AA, 30 min.)
1 oz. Centennial (8% AA, 15 min.)
1 oz. Simcoe (aroma)
Yeast: Safale 05 Dry Ale Yeast, no starter.
Log: Pitched yeast on May 24, 2009 at 70 degrees.
Carbonation: 2.2 volumes Corn Sugar: 4.03 oz. for 5.5 gallons @ 70°F
Tasting: Can't wait to taste!
