Brewer: Mark Email: -
Beer: Father's Day Pale Ale Style: American Pale Ale
Type: Extract Size: 5 gallons
Color:
19 HCU (~11 SRM)
Bitterness: 19 IBU
OG: 1.051 FG: 1.013
Alcohol: 5.0% v/v (3.9% w/w)
Boil: 70 minutes SG 1.171 1.5 gallons
3 lb. 4.8 oz. Light malt extract
3 lb. 0 oz. Amber dry malt extract
Hops: 2 oz. Northern Brewer (6.4% AA, 70 min.)
.75 oz. Cascade (5.1% AA, 15 min.)
.15 oz. Cascade (5.1% AA, 5 min.)
.10 oz. Cascade (aroma)
Yeast: White Labs California Ale Yeast (WLP001)
Log: 6/4/07 Brew Day - Aroma hops listed above were actually used to dry hop in primary fermenter (6.5 gallon plastic bucket). Fermented at ~70°F.
6/11/07 Racked to secondary fermenter (6.5 gallon glass carboy)
6/17/07 Bottled. Yield was a bit under 5 gallons as I was a bit careless when racking from primary to secondary and then from secondary to my bottling bucket.
Carbonation: Carbonated with 5 oz. corn sugar.
Tasting: 6/30/07 Had my first sample. Excellent. Low bitterness (likely due to the lower than average AAUs in the hops I used) but huge hop flavor from the dry hopping supported by a nice malt backbone and a moderate alcohol content.
Considering this was my first recipe I'm pleased. I composed this on the fly at an under-stocked home brew supply store. However there are a few changes I'll make when I brew my next batch. Next time I think I'll substitute light malt extract for the amber malt extract, either in part or in entirety, to lighten the color a bit as well as raising the IBUs by using more hops or different hops with a higher AA content.
