A light lager for my wife
Brewer: | Will Fisher | Email: | wjfisher3@juno.com
Beer: | Jean's Light Lager | Style: | American Light Lager
Type: | Extract w/grain | Size: | 5 gallons
Color: |
|
Bitterness: | 13 IBU | |||||
OG: | 1.040 | FG: | 1.008 | |||||
Alcohol: | 4.1% v/v (3.2% w/w)
Water: | I used bottled spring water from Wal-Mart
Grain: | 1 lb. 0 oz. American 6-row 0 lb. 8 oz. Flaked corn |
|||||||
Steep: | Put grains in with one gallon of water and bring to 125°, hold or 30 minutes, bring to 160° and hold another 30 minutes, pour thru strainer into brew kettle and add another gallon of water and bring to a boil
Boil: | 45 minutes | SG 1.100 | 2 gallons
3 lb. 5 oz. Light malt extract 1 lb. 0 oz. Rice extract 0 lb. 8 oz. Honey |
||||||||
add 1tsp of irish moss 15 minutes before end of boil. Used Briess Pilsen Super Light extract and brewers grade corn syrup rather than rice extract.
Hops: | 0.75 oz. Cluster (6.1% AA, 45 min.) 0.5 oz. Mt. Hood (4.2% AA, 15 min.) 0.5 oz. Mt. Hood (aroma) |
|||||||
Yeast: | mixed 1/2 tsp Wyeast Brewers Choice Nutrient with 1/2 cup warm water and added to wort before pitching 2 Activator slap packs of Wyeast #2035 American Lager yeast
Log: | Brewed 11/01/07, primary 7 days at 50°, secondary 14 days at 50°.
Carbonation: | 2.6 volumes | Corn Sugar: 3.24 oz. for 4.3 gallons @ 50°F
Actually used Coopers carbonation drops, 1 per 12 oz bottle. Carbonation was poor at first because I had it sitting in the cold basement. After bringing upstairs for a week or so it was much improved.
Tasting: | This turned out slightly darker than calculated. Taste is very smooth, also a little heavier bodied than I was shooting for but it tastes so good who cares. My wife was very satisfied and the judge at the local homebrew shop gave it a thumbs up. |
