Frau Blucher Beer
Wanted to do a Pilsner Urquell clone, but without lagering, so I tried this. I did sit this carboy in my basement for 2 months before i bottled it. It isn't clear, it has a lot of residual hops in it, I did DRY HOP with an additional 1 1/2 oz Saaz.
So, it's not an ale, it's not a lager, in fact, it's ugly. But it is wonderfully hoppy and entirely drinkable. Frau Blucher! ( horse whinny sound )

Beer: | Frau Blucher Beer | Style: | California Common
Type: | Extract w/grain | Size: | 5.5 gallons
Color: |
|
Bitterness: | 49 IBU | |||||
OG: | 1.052 | FG: | 1.012 | |||||
Alcohol: | 5.1% v/v (4.0% w/w)
Water: | I did use bottled spring water.
Grain: | 2 oz. German Munich 8 oz. American crystal 20L 8 oz. Dextrine malt (Cara-Pils) |
|||||||
Steep: | Steeped like a normal steep anyone does.
Boil: | 60 minutes | SG 1.095 | 3 gallons
6 lb. Extra Light dry malt extract
I boiled as much liquid as my pot cold hold, about 3+ gallons to keep the color as light as possible. Added irish moss with 15 minutes in boil.
Hops: | 4.5 oz. Tettnanger (4.5% AA, 60 min.) 1.8 oz. Saaz (3.75% AA, 15 min.) 1.8 oz. Saaz (aroma) |
|||||||
Yeast: | I used the Wyeast California Common smack pack.
Log: | I had a very active fermentation on this one, make sure you have lots of head space in your carboy or use a blow off tube. DRY HOP in secondary with 1 1/2 oz SAAZ. |
|||||||
Carbonation: | I put a little more corn sugar than normal, almost a full cup. Nicely carbonated like you would expect a hoppy light beer to be.
Tasting: | Turned out much better than I expected - I was gonna dump it because I did let it sit in the secondary a couple of months, but it was good when I tasted it so I bottled it, love it! Even tho' it's not clear and kinda ugly, it's good. |
