Equinox-fest bier
We are getting together tomorrow to enjoy the long-awaited Vernal equinox and to brew several batches of beer. This beer in particular is intended to be lagered throughout the summer and enjoyed on the Autumnal equinox.
Brewer: | D. McAbrew | Email: | -
Beer: | Equinox-fest bier | Style: | Märzen/Oktoberfest
Type: | All grain | Size: | 10 gallons
Color: |
|
Bitterness: | 24 IBU | |||||
OG: | 1.058 | FG: | 1.015 | |||||
Alcohol: | 5.5% v/v (4.3% w/w)
Water: | Untreated Bitterroot Valley spring runoff (delivered through the town's water system)
Grain: | 1 lb. Wheat malt 15 lb. German Vienna 9 lb. German Munich 1 lb. Belgian CaraMunich |
|||||||
Mash: | 60% efficiency | |||||||
My intention is to mash in at 120-130° and decoct the mash upward. Maybe two decoctions?
Boil: | 90 minutes | SG 1.048 | 12 gallons
If I can remember, I will add Irish Moss approx. 30 min. before the end of the boil.
Hops: | 1.5 oz. Styrian Goldings (5% AA, 60 min.) 1.5 oz. Saaz (3.8% AA, 30 min.) 1 oz. Hallertauer Hersbrucker (3% AA, 15 min.) |
|||||||
Yeast: | We are procuring a lager strain from our outstanding local German-style brewery, Bayern in Missoula, MT. Their lagers are characterized by clean flavors up front with a slight lingering malty sweetness.
Log: | Haven't brewed yet. I can provide details later. Intend to lager in my thermostat-controlled fridge (if I can fit the carboys in them). The temps. here have been 30's at night with highs 50-65 during the day. I just lagered a pilsner on the front porch within the proper range. That beer is now in the lager/fridge. Maybe I will do the same with this beer.
Tasting: | Must have patience. Fall is a long way off. |
