Surly AHA Rally 2010
The wort was provided from the Surly Brewing Company, Minneapolis, MN for the 2010 AHA Rally. It was free and given out ready to ferment. This is an approximation of the recipe from the information available.
Brewer: | Barry and Richardson | Email: | loki-dog@comcast.net
Beer: | Surly AHA Rally 2010 | Style: | English Old/Strong Ale
Type: | All grain | Size: | 5 gallons
Color: |
|
Bitterness: | 65 IBU | |||||
OG: | 1.080 | FG: | 1.009 | |||||
Alcohol: | 9.2% v/v (7.2% w/w)
Water: | None mentioned. I assume that it's simply de-clorinated and uses the rather calcium rich Minneapolis water.
Grain: | 10 lb. 8 oz. Canada Malting Pale Ale Malt 2-row 1 lb. 6 oz. Thomas Fawcett and Sons brown 3.5 oz. Thomas Fawcett and Sons crystal 3.5 oz. Thomas Fawcett and Sons crystal |
|||||||
Mash: | 85% efficiency | |||||||
This beer was provided as a final wort with no info on the mashing. But I would use a typical one or two step with these simple ingredients.
Boil: | 90 minutes | SG 1.062 | 6.5 gallons
7 oz. Belgian candi sugar
Not sure when the candi sugar was added. If you add it later make sure you adjust the hops as bitterness will increase in a lower gravity boil.
Hops: | 1 oz. Columbus (14% AA, 60 min.) .5 oz. Columbus (14% AA, 30 min.) .20 oz. Columbus (14% AA, 15 min.) 1 oz. Willamette (aroma) |
|||||||
Yeast: | Dry London ale yeast was used.
Log: | Primary for 3 weeks, Secondary 3 weeks. Added additional yeast in Secondary.
Carbonation: | Carbonated in the bottle.
Tasting: | Full mouthfeel. The maltiness is exceptional. Very nice balance of bitterness and malt. There is some toffee, as well as a little citrus (oranges), and maybe a cherry nose. One of the best of this style I've had in a homebrew! |
