Earth Day Amber

A super simple springtime recipe with a generous helping of earthy and floral hops to celebrate the season.

Brewer: Carl Hansen Email: cjhans@comcast.net
Beer: Earth Day Amber Style: American Amber Ale
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5 gallons
Color:
32 HCU (~16 SRM)
Bitterness: 30 IBU
OG: 1.058 FG: 1.012
Alcohol: 5.9% v/v (4.6% w/w)
Water: Straight tap water
Grain: 1 lb. American crystal 60L
Steep: Grains go in a hop bag and get tossed in when the burner is lit, removed at the first hop addition.
Boil: 40 minutes SG 1.107 2.7 gallons
7 lb. Amber malt extract
.5 lb. Cane sugar
Hops: 1 oz. Mt. Hood (5.1% AA, 40 min.)
1 oz. Mt. Hood (5.1% AA, 25 min.)
.5 oz. Cascade (8.6% AA, 10 min.)
.5 oz. Chinook (14.1% AA, 10 min.)
1 oz. Mt. Hood (5.1% AA, 10 min.)
Yeast: Using Scottish Ale yeast (1728) for the cold temps in my cellar and it's relatively benign influence on the beer's character. It has been described as smokey and "peaty" which also works with the "earthy" intention of the beer.
