Cascade Crisp Common aka Captain Ahol's Steam Beer
This is a modified version of a basic beer kit that was included in a complete homebrewing kit recently purchased. I add more hops and modified the recipe from instructions included in the kit. I was pleased with the results as it produced a clean crisp fresh flavored beer.

Beer: | Cascade Crisp Common aka Captain Ahol's Steam Beer | Style: | California Common
Type: | Extract | Size: | 5 gallons
Color: |

Bitterness: | 9 IBU | |||||
OG: | 1.043 | FG: | 1.045 | |||||
Alcohol: | - | |||||||
Water: | Use 5 gallon jugs of generic spring water from the super market.
Boil: | 60 minutes | SG 1.142 | 1.5 gallons
3 lb. 5 oz. Muntons Hopped Amber malt extract 1 lb. Light dry malt extract 1 lb. Amber dry malt extract |
||||||||
I forgot the irish moss.
Hops: | 1 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 30 min.) .5 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 15 min.) 1 oz. Cascade (aroma) |
|||||||
Yeast: | Munton's ale yeast 7 gm packet, pulled out 1/2 cup of the wort from the boil, cooled to about 85° F, mixed in yeast, stirred, let sit for remainder of boil until pitching in wort.
Log: | Brewed on November 4th, primary for one week at 70°, racked to secondary for two more weeks with 1 oz. of cascade leaf for dry hopping effect at 70°. FG 1.012 Bottle after 3 weeks total fermenting 1 week primary and 2 weeks secondary. Put the Cascade hop pellets right into the primary. |
|||||||
Carbonation: | 5 tablespoons of corn sugar boiled in 16 oz of water from a brita system.
Tasting: | Low carbonation with clean crisp bitterness, I was overly surprised with the flavor, I doubt if I could repeat this as it was an ad lib recipe. Will use more carbonation most likely 12 tbls. of corn sugar for the next batch. And will remember the 1 tbls of Irish moss at 30 minutes on the next batch. Nice dark amber in color. Tasted after 10 days, still needed carbonation time. After 2 weeks it has a delicious clean taste. I am sure it will continue to improve with age, but at the current rate of consumption it will die young. |
