summertime ale

an easy, quick turnover type of beer for when you need a good brew to drink but don't want to wait through a long aging period......very pleasing & drinkable on a hot summer day...(hence the name)

10 HCU (~7 SRM)
Bitterness: 34 IBU
OG: 1.048 FG: 1.010
Alcohol: 4.9% v/v (3.8% w/w)
Water: none....i have well water with a 7 ph rating.
Grain: .25 lb. British pale
.25 lb. American crystal 40L
Steep: crack grains & steep in 150-160 deg. f water for 20 min.toasted british pale malt for 15 min. in 350 deg. oven.
Boil: 60 minutes SG 1.126 2 gallons
6.6 lb. Light malt extract
no additives
Hops: 1.05 oz. Kent Goldings (6% AA, 60 min.)
0.58 oz. Fuggles (4.8% AA, 40 min.)
0.98 oz. Fuggles (4.8% AA, 15 min.)
1 oz. Fuggles (aroma)
Yeast: wyeast #1098-british.....straight from the pack(no starter).......AND IT WORKS!!!!!
Log: brewed on 7-20-97......primary ferment in glass 6 1/2 gal. carboy for 3 days at 72 deg. f.........racked to 5 1/2 gal. plastic carboy on 7-23-97......secondary ferment for 10 days......bottled on 8-2-97 w/ 1/2 cop of corn sugar.....very drinkable in 10-14 days.....this is a quick one, but a good one!
Carbonation: see above
Tasting: very clear.dark gold colour.....moderately hoppy, with a slightly sweet malt balance.....excellent carbonation....thick, white head......if i'd make any changes next time, it would be a bit more hops in both the boil & flavor/aroma, maybe even a bit of dry-hopping(i'm a certified hop-head)
