Porter Brown Ale

Developed this recipe from a Black Butte Porter Clone recipe I got from the Cats Meow 3 web page. I ad libbed on the recipe to my taste and available ingredients. It has a very smooth taste and just the right amount of bite I prefer. It is a bit sweet, probably due to the grains I used.

Beer: Porter Brown Ale Style: Robust Porter
Type: Extract w/grain Size: 5.0 gallons
Color:
19 HCU (~11 SRM)
Bitterness: 43 IBU
OG: 1.000 FG: 1.016
Alcohol: -
Water: Added 1/8 tsp of table salt and 1/8 tsp of magnesium sulfate to 6 bolied gallons of tap water.
Grain: 8 oz. Chocolate malt
8 oz. Black Malt
6 oz. Crystal Malt 20
6 oz. Crystal Malt
Steep: steeped crystal and black patent grains at 170d F for 30 minutes
Added chocolate malt to the main boil along with the dry amber malt and extract pale malt.
Boil: 60 min. minutes SG 1.000 2.5 gallons
8 oz. Malto Dextrin
3 lb. Plain Amber Malt DM
4 lb. Alexanders Pale Malt
added malto dextrine to boil.
Hops: 1 oz. Challenger (8% AA, 30 min.)
1/2 oz. Kent Goldings (5% AA, 15 min.)
Yeast: 10 gram packet of nottingham dry ale yeast.
Log: Brewed 3-26-03
Racked from primary fermenter to secondary fermenter 3-30-03
bottled 4-6-03
OG: 1.50
FG: 1.016
Carbonation: boiled 1 cup tap water and added 3/4 cup of corn sugar; added to brew and bottled.
Tasting: Good smooth taste with just the right amount of hop in the after taste.
The color is slightly darker than portrayed; more like a porter.
Very smooth, and I am looking forward to drinking it. I will wait for 7 days or so before drinking the first bottle.
