Beaver Island Kingdom Stout

Many people don't know this, but Michigan was home to the first (and only) kingdom in the United States. James Strang led a breakaway sect of the LDS to a new home on Beaver Island, where he was subsequently crowned "king" over his ecclesiastical monarchy. As you might imagine, this didn't go over too well with the islanders who weren't part of Strang's sect, as well as the United States government. Strang's kingdom ultimately ended, but the lore and legend inspired by this somewhat bizarre chapter in Michigan history has not. Therefore, I bring you a tribute to Michigan's kingdom in this Imperial Stout.

Bitterness: 47 IBU

Alcohol: 8.4% v/v (6.6% w/w)
Grain: 7 lb. American 2-row
5 lb. American victory
3 lb. Belgian biscuit
3 lb. American crystal 120L
3 lb. Dextrine malt (Cara-Pils)
2 lb. American chocolate
.5 lb. American black patent
2 lb. Flaked oats
.25 lb. Roasted barley
Mash: 80% efficiency
Mash 1 hour at 155. Mashout for 10 mins. at 168.
Boil: 120 minutes SG 1.077 11 gallons
5 lb. Maple syrup
Hops: 2 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 60 min.)
1.25 oz. Willamette (5% AA, 60 min.)
1 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 45 min.)
1.25 oz. Willamette (5% AA, 45 min.)
.5 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 30 min.)
.25 oz. Willamette (5% AA, 30 min.)
.5 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 15 min.)
.25 oz. Willamette (5% AA, 15 min.)
1 oz. Willamette (aroma)
Yeast: English Ale yeast should work fine.
Log: Put some blueberry or pine extract into the secondary to give this beer an even more "Michigan-y" character.
